Clever Career Networking Tip Inspired By McDonalds Big Mac

Clever Career Networking Tip Inspired By McDonald's Big Mac 54 The secret to the success of McDonald's Big Mac might just be the key to success in your job search. This is a guest post by Leslie Drew. If you’d also like to guest post here on JobMob, follow these guest post guidelines. Every year McDonald's sells 560 million Big Macs a year. That's crazy! Over half a billion. It would take you almost 16 years to count that high. What's so special about the Big Mac? Is it the largest burger in the world?eval No. According to the Guinness Book of World Records that distinction belongs to Mallie's Sports Bar and Grill in Southgate, MI. Is the Big Mac the best tasting burger?eval No. According to Zagat's Fast Food Survey In-N-Out Burger holds that title. Was it the first of its kind? Nope. According to this article the whole Big Mac concept is a direct copy of the Bob's Big Boy burger. So what is it? “Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame bun. “ It's Gotta Be The Sauce, Right? What's so special about the special sauce? Other than calling Thousand Island dressing “special sauce,” absolutely nothing. What the special sauce did was allow McDonald's to take another restaurant's idea and wrap it in a super effective marketing campaign. That marketing campaign is the reason you (and I) can still sing the ingredients by heart easily 10 years after the last time I can remember hearing it on TV. And I don't even like McDonald's. That is special. What You Can Learn From The Big Mac If you can take anything from the story of the Big Mac it should be that you don't have to be the biggest or the best or revolutionary to be the most successful. What you do need is a good marketing campaign to get your message out. And the most effective marketing in the world is… word of mouth. Word of mouth is just another way to say networking. I like using word of mouth advertising better than networking because people grimace less when they hear it. That's because most people are career networking horribly wrong. As a matter of fact what many people consider “career networking” is nothing more than begging. A Quick and Easy Way To Start Career Networking Now The bad news is without some type of career networking you will never be as successful as you could and should be by career networking properly. The good news is you already know and do everything you need to get started. Keep in contact with as many of the people you were laid off with as possible. They will play a key role in building your networking team. Get their email addresses and place them into a mailing group. Many of the jobs you'll come across during your job search won't be right for you. Don't just skip by them. Most job search websites allow you to email job openings to people. Email every job you're not applying to but might fit someone else's skill set to your email group. This works best if you send specific job openings to specific people but don't worry about that starting out. After a couple of weeks you'll start to notice that some of the people you have been sending those emails to will start sending you emails with jobs you might be interested in. If you aren't interested in those jobs then send those opening back out to your career networking group. Soon you will notice that you are becoming a resource for people who are in the same boat as you. In return you will have created a team of people who will be directly and indirectly increasing your chances of finding a job. It's a baby step but a step in the right direction, and infinitely better than no step at all. Congratulations- you're career networking! Self-help isnt selfish

Self-help isn’t selfish This world is both a strange, scary and complex place as well as being the most beautiful, amazing and inspiring one. How you view it will impact how much you enjoy it and how much you can and are able to achieve. How we approach our situations allows us to either be prepared for the pressures it throws at us or be renewed by the new experiences. We can learn from our failures and successes. Every one of us will experience dark days and great days and resilience is a muscle that we can build on. Taking time to reflect and learn will help us and to do so isn’t selfish in the least. I hope these steps help you as they have helped me. 1) You cannot run a car on empty so don’t try to push your body to do the same. You need to rest and recharge. Now that means body, mind and soul. Yes, you may get enough hours sleep but are you giving yourself time to think things through and plan next steps? Eating the foods that help you? Exercising regularly? Developing that interest you have? All these things are part of a balance that you need to give yourself. It may be there are others who need you and demand your time but you cannot help anyone if you can’t first help yourself. Look after yourself. 2) You cannot do everything. Sorry to break this news to you but you are human and you have to say no to some things! Choose what you want to do, say no to the things you can’t or don’t want to do. Saying no is needed and you don’t have to feel guilty. Saying no is accepting you are a finite resource. You are managing yourself and your time. Remember: guilt is a wasted emotion. 3) Let go of what is in the past Accept it happened and move forward. Once you have made a decision you have to move on. Reflecting is great but once that reflection is complete you have to let the baggage go or it will weigh you down. What you cannot change you should accept. Make peace with your past or it will nag at you. If you are still struggling it is worth talking the issue through with a counsellor who can help you to reconcile yourself to what has happen and help you decode your feelings. 4) Perfection doesn’t exist. You cannot be perfect no matter how hard you try. Chasing an impossible dream is pointless. Think what you would tell a friend who tried to do this, you wouldn’t expect them to keep chasing after the impossible. Be a friend to yourself and accept that trying hard is enough. Do your best but don’t wear yourself out on a fool’s errand. 5) Make time for yourself (and guard this time jealously). That time could be spent meditating, walking, exercising or just switching off from the rest of the planet. So, allow yourself time away from your mobile, let the answerphone pick up the call. Don’t check work emails when you are on leave. The world will not end. Making this a regular, planned decision, will help. Even if it is just an hour once a week it will recharge you and your thinking. 6) You deserve the best too. Often we make sacrifices for others. We put our families first. That’s lovely but sometimes we need to put ourselves first too. This isn’t being selfish but it is self-protection. Also, continual self-sacrifice can lead us to think we need a thank you when it was our decision to do this. Be realistic. 7) Asking for help is a sign of strength. It is not a weakness quite the reverse. If you are struggling then reach out. As someone who battles with depression I did once feel talking or asking for help was a sign I was not coping. I have come to realise that actually it is a mechanism to help me cope. When I feel under pressure I chat to friends by text, face to face or via messenger. It helps to actually say how I am feeling and get that fear out in the open. Having a friendly voice suggesting ideas is part of the process and I can take their suggestions and advice on board. All of these things are suggestions. But the aim of this blog is to say that you are not being selfish for thinking about yourself. This is actually a pretty wonderful world but at times it can seem dark, complex and worrying. Helping yourself to face it in the best condition will help you deal with what life brings you. Good luck and keep going forward.

Are Smart Meters Accurate and Will They Save Money

Are Smart Meters Accurate and Will They Save Money I like writing  money related articles once in a while. And this one is one such article. I am a big fan of smart meters. I cant wait for the national rollout and have one installed for my home.  Smart meters are accurate and like many other things, once you have the data or information available, you can alter your choices to make sure you improve your energy consumption. This is one technology young people can really look forward to, I think it will help a lot of people. A new infographic released from Smart Energy GB shows that a majority of people who have one find them accurate, with 76% trusting the information that they give as opposed to 57% who think the old system does a good job. It also shows that unsurprisingly gadget-friendly younger people are more interested in the device, and that 59% of people who have heard of one would like one. The northwest is more clued up about smart meters, and the main appeal of having one is in being able to count up your energy usage in pounds and pence, the graphic shows. 2

Students decide the best undergraduate employers in the UK - Debut

Students decide the best undergraduate employers in the UK - Debut Tired of frittering your money away on some Eastern European sesh holiday every summer? Need to find something productive to do this year, but dont know where to start? Well, youre in luck. Rate My Placement have collated over 7,000 reviews from their student users on their internships. These students had done placements at huge companies around the country. Students ranked their experiences on a number of factors including how much responsibility they were given their relationships with colleagues general  impressions of the company training and development opportunities and the transferable skills they gained. And they had plenty to say for themselves once theyd finished. Using the data, they compiled a list ranking the best undergraduate employers in the country for students. Lets dive into the results, shall we? The UKs best undergraduate employers Tech legends Microsoft were top of the pile this year, moving up five places from 2016 to bury former leaders Bank of America Merrill Lynch. The coup represents a shift in trends from previous years where finance and professional services firms made up the entire top 10. This year, names like Warner Bros., recruitment company Hays and law firm Grant Thornton (4th, 5th and 3rd respectively) add much needed variety of sector to the list. However, these were still a minority with Credit Suisse and Morgan Stanley also in high positions. PwC closed out the top 10 after making quite the mess at the Oscars this past week. There were also plenty of new names in the top 100, including EDF Energy, Virgin Media and Transport for London. When asked how Microsoft managed their stunning victory this year, their university recruiter Lucy Saunders praised their company culture with regard to interns. Internally, our interns are extremely well regarded, she said. And they never fail to make huge, positive impact to our UK business and beyond.
